Big Roll Guidelines

General

  • Gold Star Sod Farms can provide a forklift and an operator to roll out sod.
  • Using an attachment, a driver may stay and unroll if arranged.
  • Gold Star’s drivers are instructed to use their best judgement, based on experience, to decide where they will unroll.
  • Rolls are not appropriate for steep slopes or small areas. Pallets should be ordered for these areas. If you are not sure if your job site would be suitable for big rolls, ask for a free site review by one of our sales people.

We also offer an exclusive roll-out service using the Power-Trac Big Roll Installer

PowerTrac unrolling: $600/day min. fee

The Landscaper is responsible to provide 4-5 people per machine to pull, fit, and trim sod. Trimming should be done after all the sod is unrolled, unless there are additional crew people.

Other responsibilities include but are not limited to having or doing the following:

  1. Watch the weather. If rain is predicted, it is best to postpone. Sod cannot be unrolled at wet sites. To cancel, Gold Star requires a minimum of 24 hours notice.
  2. The area to be sodded should be prepared and ready prior to delivery of sod.
  3. 4-5 people will be needed to make the installation go efficiently and quickly.
  4. Additional people will be needed if the landscaper is planning to do multiple trailer loads in a day.
  5. Make sure your irrigation system or sprinklers/hoses are on site and operational.
  6. Steel head rakes to pull seams together, a wheelbarrow for scrap and utility knives or sod edging tools for trimming and cutting are necessary items.

Further Instructions

  1. Gold Star allows 1 hour unloading time for 10,000 sq.ft., 3 hours are allowed for unrolling 10,000 sq.ft. @ 3¢ per sq.ft. cost. After this time, $60 per hour is prorated and charged. For less than 8,000sq.ft. a flat rate of $100.00 plus $60.00/hr will be charged.
  2. The carrying distance of the big rolls should be kept to a minimum. If the unloading site is a considerable distance from the installation site, the landscaper should have appropriate equipment to get the rolls to the installation site (i.e. dump truck, or tip cart.) The big rolls weigh between 800-1,000 lbs. each.
  3. Dimensions of the rolls are 4’wide by 50’ long, totaling 200 sq.ft. They can be cut as a solid 4’ width (no seam), or 2-24” widths (1 seam).
  4. Irrigation should begin within 20 minutes of installation.
Sod is a perishable product. It must be watered in & kept moist for the first 19 days.
